Your Danakil Depression tour begins with an early morning departure from Mekele. Travel through northern Ethiopia’s dry and dramatic landscapes before entering the Danakil Depression, a region known for its salt plains, volcanic formations, and striking desert scenery. Cross the desert and salt landscapes, visit traditional Afar settlements where appropriate, and continue to Hamed Ela. As evening approaches, enjoy sunset views over the salt desert before settling into a traditional desert camp. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included, with overnight accommodation in Hamed Ela.
Start early for a full day of exploration around Dallol, one of the most colorful geothermal areas in Ethiopia. Discover mineral formations, volcanic features, salt flats, and surreal desert scenery. Continue to Lake Asale, where you may observe traditional salt-mining activities and the vast salt landscape of the Danakil region. Return to Hamed Ela or your Afar camp in the evening and enjoy the quiet atmosphere of the desert under a star-filled sky. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included, with overnight accommodation in Hamed Ela or an Afar desert camp.
After breakfast, travel across the Danakil desert toward Erta Ale Volcano. The route passes through remote volcanic terrain and wide desert landscapes before reaching the trekking area. In the evening, begin your guided hike toward the Erta Ale volcanic landscape, where you can observe the dramatic surroundings and experience one of Ethiopia’s most remarkable natural environments. Spend the night at a basic volcanic camp near Erta Ale. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included.
Wake early to enjoy sunrise over the Erta Ale volcanic landscape before descending from the mountain. After breakfast, begin the drive back through the Danakil region toward Mekele. Your Danakil Depression, Dallol, and Erta Ale tour concludes upon arrival in Mekele. Breakfast and lunch are included.
